Daniel H. Burris – On This Date in 1845

On this date the 13th of June, in 1845 our paternal great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Daniel Burris passed away in Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana. He was buried in Greensboro Friends Cemetery, Greensboro, Indiana.

He was married to Mary Horton and had 16 children.

Interersting Tidbits from Find A Grave:

According to Hazard’s “History of Henry County”:
“[Daniel] was a member of the Friends’ Church and like so many other members of that body hated with a righteous fervor the institution of slavery. He was an abolitionist and in the days of slavery assisted runaway negroes along the underground route to Canada. He was born in North Carolina on July 10, 1771 and his wife was born in the same state on March 25 1778. They were married in North Carolina about the year 1794. They lived to be very old people and upon dying were both buried in the cemetery at Greensboro, Henry County, Indiana.”

Some have made family trees indicating Daniel had a wife before Mary Horton, one Phebe Lanzey. The date given in these genealogies for the marriage to Phebe is actually that of his marriage to Mary Horton. Daniel’s marriage to Mary on this date is supported in “U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900” and Duck Creek Monthly Meeting records, Henry Co., IN, microfilm #51084.2. I believe this Daniel has been confused with his nephew Daniel Burris 1797-1869. The nephew Daniel and his wife Phebe Tanzey are buried at Boxley Cem., Boxley, IN.
