John T. DeVille – On This Date in 1785

On this day the 15th of February in 1785 our maternal great-great-great-great grandfather, John T. Deville was born Rapides Post, Louisiana to parents Miguel “Michel” DeVille and Marguerite Katzenberger.* According numerous records, John’s name was spelled as John Tee (Gentille) Deville, Johnter Deville, Jean T. Deville, and Juan Deville.**

John’s christening was February 27, 1787 in New Orleans, Louisiana.**

Interesting Tidbit:*

Before John was born, his father “Miguel DeVille had the largest tobacco plantation in Louisiana during the Revolutionary War period. He donated 400 carats of tobacco to Galvez’s troops. Miguel and three of his sons were members of the Fapides Post Militia under Captain Etienne Layssard. His plantation of 9-1/2 arpents on Red River was 50 arpents deep. On July 1768 Miguel was issued a Royal Spanish Land Grant – Section 16. His 2-story plantation homes were described in his succession as were the many outhouses and cabins.”*

John married Felicity Jannot – Find A Grave around 1812 and had 9 children.

At the baptism of their daughter Marie Jeanne, Father Jean Emile Martin noted in his records that this was a civil marriage, and not blessed in the catholic church.

John T. DeVille*** passed away between 1850 and 1860 in Holloway Prairie, Louisiana and is buried in an unmarked grave in Plot No. 6 inside the iron fence of the Deville plot at the Old Catholic Cemetery, Buckeye (Deville), Rapides Parish, Louisiana, USA.The graves of both John and Felicity are next to their son, Michael Deville but no burial stones are visible.***
